Dr Ken Cruickshank is an Associate Professor in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) at the University of Sydney. “I think it’s spin for the election,” he said. “These [are] 50,000 to 60,000 extra students… money will be given to schools, but no permanent teachers. “There’s no indication that the money will keep going next year.” NSW Greens MLC John Kaye said even if every dollar of the Gonski funding was spent on ESL teachers, it would not be enough.$14 million, welcome as it is, will only buy another 140 teachers at best,” he said. “That’s only a 16 per cent increase above the existing, roughly speaking, 900 teachers of ESL in NSW public schools.”
